TUTORING
When you bought your computer you
were probably offered classes to learn how to use it. Maybe you've been thinking about
signing up for those classes at your local vocational school. The problem is, when taking
classes which ones to take. Beginner?,You already know how to use the mouse and you have
used Word for many things but Word isn't covered until the second week. Maybe you are an
whiz at Word and get around your computer very well but when you take an advanced class
you don't know the terminology well enough to understand what they are talking about.
Wouldn't it be nice to have someone show you how to use your computer in your
home? You learn what you need to use the programs you use. You learn as little or as much
as you want.
My first lesson is "You can't
break it" Most people are afraid to try new things on their computer because they are
afraid of messing something up or getting one of those dreaded message windows. I will
show you how to safely back up or "Undo" whatever you just did. Then you can try
it again. I can teach you what those message windows mean so they aren't so scary.
The second lesson is "What to
do if you lock up or freeze your computer" I will tell you how to unfreeze your
computer or how to safely shut it down and start over. It happens. Most times you have
given it too much to do at once. Sometimes if you just walk away and take a 15 minute
break it will come back on its own. Sometimes it needs your help. A Cold Shut Down
(Poking the off button) is never a good idea. However sometimes it is necessary.
The third lesson is "Patients
is the key". You have to have some patients when working on a computer. Computers are
getting bigger and faster every day. Still the human mind thinks, the computer should be
able to keep up with what we want it to do. Usually yes, but sometimes you need to stop
and think before you ask it to do something. I try to work only as fast as I can remember
what I did last. Let me explain. I try to work as if something could go wrong at every
stage. By remembering what I ask it to do two steps ago I can easily go back and fix it.
If I did everything as fast as I possibly could and didn't take time to make a mental note
of what button I clicked on, I could not go back and fix it. Most mistakes are made by
clicking on something we didn't mean to. Many programs have a wonderful little button
called undo. By clicking on this button it will undo whatever you just did in the program.
Some programs even have an Undo history where you can go back as many as 10 steps and Undo
whatever you did 2 - 10 steps ago. Find this button! it is at the top of your screen on
the "Tool Bar". It looks like an arrow pointing left.
The rest of the lessons are up to
you and what you want to learn. Pick any subject. If I don't know about your subject I
will tell you. Or give me a week and I will learn everything I can about it.
Sincerely Mara Frye
